How to Clean Curtains

how to clean curtains

How to clean curtains is the most important bit of information I leave with my client after installing their window treatments.

No matter how clean or dust free your house is, inevitably your curtains or valances or shades will get dusty.

Many ready made curtains can be washed in your machine wihtout a problem, but I would never recommend that be done with any custom treatments or any that you really love.

If you have ready made (store bought) curtains, there is probably a label with care and cleaning attached to the hem. You should be safe to follow these.

If you can't find a tag and especially if you have custom made draperies this is how to clean those curtains.

Don't bring them to the dry cleaner. Custom window treatments have at least one layer of lining and chances are each layer will react differently to the dry cleaning process and one or more may stretch or shrink and the draperies may never look the same again.

Take your home vacuum, add the wide attachment and starting at the top or header or the drapery, slide it down whatever pleats there are.

A regular lint brush or roller can also be used in between vacuumings.

Since most sheers are made of polyester, they can be tossed into the unheated dryer with a clean white towel. Don't be tempted to use any kind of dryer sheet and be sure to remove any curtain hooks before tumbling.

Curtain cleaning couldn't be any easier!
