Is your garage storage really what you need? Let's clean your garage and get your cars where they belong

When I think of garage storage, I think of shelves and hooks and cabinets for all our stuff.

A nice neat area that holds cars, lawnmowers, tools and of course bikes. Unfortunately most of us have little or no storage at all. We just stack it or pile it up as much out of the way as we can stand. Then we try to maneuver our cars around the mess. This is not fun!

Come on let's get your garage cleaned and organized once and for all. It won't take too long and when you're done you can stand back and say, "Wow, it looks great!"

Warning! This is hard work and it will take most of a weekend to complete but trust me it's really worth it and you know it don't you.

If your idea of garage storage looks like this picture (mine did) then you're ready to clean it up and put your cars back where they belong at night. A nice cozy, clean place for them to sleep tight all night or all day for that matter.

Garage storage has another nice benefit. All your stuff will have a place to go, so you're not going to fill up your basement with the stuff from your garage but you might need to have a garage sale to get rid of the extras you don't need. Hey, some cash on top of a clean garage. Now that's a real bonus and you can take that cash and go out for drinks and dinner, if you're not exhausted that is.

On a side note. I am a woodworker so good garage storage is essential because I use my garage for my workshop and I need a bench and a place for my tools.
If you still need one in your garage, here is a plan to build your own workbench

The very first thing you need to decide is if you're going to use a garage storage kit or build it yourself. The kits are somewhat costly but they are really great and they come in a wide variety of configurations for most any need.

Do you have lots of small things that need a place to live or maybe you have lots of garden/landscaping tools that need more space. Wall hung items have to be considered first because if you get cabinets or storage bins they take up a lot of wall room.

I would suggest that you spend some time deciding what garage storage system you need and then visiting the store. The choices can be a bit overwhelming but you know what you need so don't be scared. Pick out the system or decide what you're going to build then get to it.

All right let's get started. Don't be afraid or apprehensive about it just jump right in and get used to the water, I mean dirt.

First thing you need to do is take everything out of the garage and put it in the driveway for now. I mean everything, including tools, hoses and anything on the walls.

When that's done you need to sweep or blow out all of the dirt, dust or leaves that have accumulated in and around the stuff you just got out.

When you're finished clearing all that out, stand back and admire all of the vast space that you can have for your cars. Wow, you say, look at that room! You may even have room for your boat, camper or motorcycle. Feels good, doesn't it?

Note: If you're going to finish the garage floor then you will need two weekends and a place to put your stuff in the meantime. The finished garage floor is a great way to motivate you to keep it clean too.

The finishes come in a wide selection and colors as well as types. Epoxy finishes seem to work the best as they are quite durable and stain resistant.
They go on like paint but take a long time to dry so be prepared to wait.

Interlocking mats are terrific if you use your garage as a shop because they provide cushioning for your feet and legs. They go together like a giant jigsaw puzzle and if one is damaged it can be easliy replaced. Nice huh?

The third option is a rollout flooring. This is very similar to the vinyl flooring that we use for kitchens but it is much tougher and provides more cushioning for you legs and feet.
It comes in a variety of colors and textures and is quite easy to put down.

Okay now you have to figure out a way to replace that stuff but not have a mess when you're done.
Garage storage is about planning and utlilzing the space efficiently. Take the time to do it right and you'll never have to. By now you have planned out where you are going to put shelves, cabinets and hooks and now is the time install them. Don't forget to think about access to these areas when the cars are parked in the garage.

Install the pieces as recommended by the maker and try to utilize all the available wall space and don't forget the area above the big door. This is a garage storage area that's great for long, flat items like skiis, sleds, boards or even shallow bins.

Once all the pieces are installed you can begin to replace all the stuff you plan on keeping. My rule is this: If I have not used it in a year then I get rid of it.

That should do it. Boy I'm tired for you just thinking about all of the work you did but it sure does look great and now you know where all of your stuff is and that's not on the floor. do it again. Bliss! or just a really good feeling.
