Personal style carries over into the smallest of details. Decorating a bathroom, one of the most used places in your home is no exception.
Decorating a bathroom often doesn't need too much effort. Our kid’s bathroom is themed as many kid’s bathrooms are: ocean reef. Now that isn’t very original, but it is still cute and they like it. Being not so original means it was easy to find ocean reef bathroom stuff to decorate it with. We have a fish toilet paper holder, a fish bath mat, bright blue fish hand towels and blue ceramic tiles around the sink with a few salt water fish tiles interspersed.
With a bit of effort, you can change the look of your tile simply by changing the color of the grout.

My mom’s bathroom is also ocean reef themed but has some pieces of coral, seashell shower curtain rings, and a shell backed mirror along with sand colored towels.
My point is, a theme gives you an anchor (no pun intended) around which to easily decorate. You may have a bathroom spanning the entire length of your house or you may have one with just enough room to shower in and hang your towel, either way, don’t overdo it or it will look contrived.
For the most part, neutral or warm colors (beige, browns, gold) are most commonly used in decorating a bathroom. Choose a neutral wall color for instance, maybe highlighting one of the walls with a darker color in the same shade either with paint or even tile. Your bathroom fixtures can serve as a guide to the rest of your decorating. The finish and style (are they modern looking, angular, antique looking) should all be the same. Since there usually isn’t a lot of space, try making your decorating pieces functional too. Add a basket to hold extra toilet paper or hand towels. A tin pail can hold some fragrant soaps. Lavender is a calming scent often found in hand soaps.
Steam in the bathroom will make dust cling to silk flowers and such. It's best to keep knick knacks in the bath to a minimum.
Open shelves can tend to look messy. Closable cabinets or closets help keep the look tidy.
Bathroom lighting should be bright enough to put your make up on or shave by. Lighting that is next to a vanity mirror and at eye level is generally better for this purpose than ceiling lights. But if you have a high ceiling, a small chandelier in a bathroom will really make a big impact.

Another note on color, in a small bathroom, green walls often make your reflection look a bit…sickly. You won’t find many green bathrooms in beauty shops.
For a spa-like feel, try decorating a bathroom using bamboo or natural accents. Blue and brown are traditional spa colors and unlined white cotton curtains give an airy, relaxing feel.
Don’t forget to hang a picture or two on the wall. If you are looking to change up your house a bit, decorating a bathroom is a good place to start and learn a bit about your style.
